Visual Comfort gives a typical 30–36 inch range and describes the lower end as more appropriate for lower ceilings and the upper end as more useful with taller ceilings. The common thread is not “36 inches is always right.” It is start with the table, then read the room.

Fixture Width and Hanging Height Should Be Read Together

A wider chandelier often feels closer to the table even when its lowest point has not moved.
